Sweat It Out: A Self-Esteem Campaign

Get Some…

Get some..means get some self-esteem, not “get some” – we are not that type of blog. It is important when learning about self-esteem and personal power that we be honest about hour highs and lows.  The one thing we know is that self esteem is something we keep building, it isn’t as if we wake one day to find “Gee, I’ve got great self esteem” instead we learn that we have tools to use to build and maintain health self-esteem.

WHAT IS SELF-ESTEEM and Personal Power?

According to the National Association of Self-Esteem , self esteem is defined as “The experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” Self esteem also relates to self worth, self responsbility, accountability and happiness.  Some define it as the amount in which an individual respects their core self.

The Science or Quantum Physics of Emotions

Asks questions such as:

Do our cells replicate emotions?  Does our mind create our body?

by Megan

Here is are a handful of videos from the wonderful documentary/film  What the Bleep Do We Know (2004).  These videos offer 1 explaination on how the physical body make biologically creates emotions.  I think it is helpful to know how we develop emotions and how we can replicate emotions physical (cell multiplication).  Be patient and watch the first video all the way through, TRUST ME, it is worth it. After you watch the 1st one you’ll likely want to watch the others.

**Please note, there are critics of the idea supported in this documentary that do not think the mind can shape the physical body.  Ken Wilber is one of this critics and he is a brilliant modern philosopher, check him out if you don’t know him yet.

This chapter helps us see how we form “addictions” to certain emotions.  Once we become of how we form these emotions we can break negative or harmful patterns – by doing this we may be able to build individual self-esteem.

Wait for minute 5 here if you want to learn about how our mind creates our body, in turn our body image. What I gained from this was largely what I discuss below about having the awareness to identify our emotions, since we can’t avoid our thoughts and emotions from occuring, the one thing we can do is acknowledge them – and when they are painful, then we can have some say instead of our minds running wild on us – hence lowering our self esteem.

Here we see her “HATE” herself, however, she addresses her thoughts affect her, so she takes control of her thoughts and finds a way to ACCEPT herself.  Please take the time to watch this, this will give closure to the above videos.

Some believe that our attitudes can affect us on a celluar level (that is what the Bleep Do we Know is discussing in detail).   I do believe this because I learned to overcome my body through becoming aware of how my mind and thoughts would work and to prevent them before they became harmful (hurt my self-esteem).

Again in What the Bleep Do We Know video below here it talks about how our individual consciousness then feeds into the whole which shapes the world that we live in. If this is true, then potentially, my experiences and my subsequent work to manage my self-defeating thoughts will feed back into the environment to shape others experiences.

Is an improved life for the individual and collective whole, simply awareness of our thoughts by all?

Dr. RANDY PAUSCH – of The Last Lecture, gave an incredible lecture on how through the diagnosis of terminal cancer, he has learned how to embrace today, and how to accept his situation, but ultimately, he learned to accept himself. We should learn from his lessons he learned through facing death, he is a great voice of wisdom on linking our body and mind for a healthier individual:

I just don’t know how anyone can argue that our body has no effect on our emotions. They are interconnected; you can’t live without one or the other. I’m not sure if it is that people don’t want something “physical” to be the cause of the “emotional” that if that were the case then it would dimished the value of the emotion. You could use PMS as a perfect example of this. When a women is emotional b/c she is menstruating her emotions are diminished as not being valid. The thought here is that she does not really feel what she is feeling; it is her period that is making her feel this way. I speak now only for myself but right before my period and the first few days into it I am very emotional and I know that the reason is that I am producing more hormones during this time than I do at other times of the month. This knowledge of what is going on with my body and subsequently my emotions allows me to accept how I feel with understanding and compassion, it gives me ownership over myself and results in more self-respect. I could apply this same physical/emotional interaction to many aspects of my life like choosing to stay mad at my partner b/c I don’t want to forgive yet, the moment I move on I lose the emotional high of being angry, read again emotional high, like a drug BECAUSE IT IS. Why is it so hard to believe that our minds and our inseparable
