Dare to Dream: Women’s Soccer

June 10, 2008 · 3 Comments

We have an excellent documentary to recommend called Dare to Dream: Women’s Soccer from HBO.  It is a candid look at the impact of women’s soccer and the winning of the World Cup, and how this changed the soccer for women for the future.

I played soccer for many years and I still prefer to watch women’s soccer because I can relate to the way the game is played.
In my experience watching and scrimmaging with men, they play very differently, less about control and teamwork and more about raw power. Of course this is a generalization. I saw the Women’s World Cup quarter finals in San Jose several years ago and it was amazing to see people so excited about professional women’s sport.

Your comment about soccer for men being about power and less about strategy is one that I have heard about women vs. men basketball too.

A while I heard someone mention that the reason the USA was more willing to accept women’s soccer was because it was a sport that men hadn’t adopted in the USA making it more available to the public to accept as a sport for women. I thought that was interesting and possibly somewhat true?!

I think that probably is true, unfortunately for all the amazing female atheletes than enjoy male dominated sports like basketball.
I heard a story recently about a girl playing on a community league for many years, on a boys team and they eventually kicked her off the team when she started showing the boys up at their own game and making them insecure.
