Sweat It Out: A Self-Esteem Campaign

Banning Extreme Thinness

May 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

This article appeared last month on the MSNBC website.  The French Parliament has adopted a bill that will ban the promotion of extreme thinness in fashion magazines, websites, and advertisements in the hopes of decreasing the rates of anorexia nervosa not only among models, but among the general population.

Will it help?  Will one country passing a bill that will make using ultra-thin models illegal change the way that we view ourselves?

Personally, I’m inclined to side with Marleen S. Williams, quoted in this article as saying “it was nearly impossible to prove that the media causes eating disorders”.  I think that it is a much more complex issue than this article implies.  The media may have an effect, but there is no way to predict if it is the only trigger.

I think it will be interesting to see if it does in fact have an effect and this being Paris one of the leaders in fashion the public will see the difference. What if they actually start increasing their sales like Dove did when they started using models of various shapes, sizes and color. I say why not, it couldn’t hurt.
